Gym floor tile protection is a commercial-grade cover system chosen for the facility’s events, traffic, staff, storage space, acoustics, and budget — not for its price tag. Carpet-faced rolls ($1.18/sq ft) cover a full court fast and look right for formal events. Modular tiles ($2.56/sq ft) install tape-free and suit gyms converted weekly. Vinyl tarps ($0.92/sq ft) cost least and fit occasional use.
For schools, colleges, churches, recreation centers, and event facilities, the right system should do more than cover the hardwood. It should protect the floor reliably, deploy efficiently, store properly, and support the way the facility is actually used.

What Actually Fails on a Gym Floor
Before comparing systems, it’s worth knowing what you’re protecting against — because it isn’t wear.
According to the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association, a 25/32″ maple floor sanded every 8 to 12 years can exceed 75 years of service, and fewer than 1% of floor replacements happen because the wear surface ran out. Floors almost never wear out. They get flooded, gouged, point-loaded, and mis-maintained into an early grave.
That reframes the whole decision. Gym floor protection isn’t buying extra years of wear layer — you get those from recoating on schedule whether or not you own a cover. It’s insurance against the unplanned event that ends a floor thirty years early: one moisture intrusion under a buffet line, one scissor lift on bare hardwood, one row of chair legs dragged across the three-point line.
Replacing a 10,000 sq ft floor runs $120,000 to $260,000 installed. Sanding and refinishing runs $4 to $7 per square foot, plus two to four weeks with the gym offline. A cover for the same floor costs $9,200 to $25,600, once. (pricing as of October, 2026)
Start with the actual numbers, because no competitor publishes them:
| System | List price | 10,000 sq ft | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl tarp | $0.92 / sq ft | ~$9,200 | 12-year limited |
| Court Armor Max rolls | $1.18 / sq ft | ~$11,800 | 4-year limited |
| Court Armor tiles | $46 / tile (18 sq ft) | ~$25,600 | 7-year limited |
Covering material only — storage racks, freight, and custom sizing are quoted separately. Lead time is 20 business days from PO and sample approval, so an order for a 20 May graduation needs to be in by mid-April.
Note what that table does not say: the cheapest system carries the longest warranty. Vinyl is durable material. What it isn’t is fast — every install needs new seam tape, where Court Armor’s hook tape is reusable 50+ times. Convert your gym twice a year and vinyl is the right call and we’ll tell you so. Convert it twice a month and the labor hours and tape will cost more than the material ever saved.

What gym floor tile protection is
Court Armor Gym Floor Tiles are individual modular sections with a 100% recycled, solution-dyed polyester face and a moisture-barrier backing. They lay flat over hardwood or synthetic athletic flooring and butt against one another. No tape, no adhesive, no seaming.
That’s the whole design premise, and everything tiles are good at follows from it. A roll system is one continuous surface that has to be joined; a tile system is 556 independent pieces that don’t. That makes tiles slower to deploy across a full court and dramatically more flexible everywhere else.
The Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association notes that gymnasium floor covers come in a range of styles and thicknesses and add a layer of protection for multipurpose maple floors. Which style is right isn’t a quality question. It’s an operations question.
The numbers
| Spec | Court Armor Gym Floor Tiles |
|---|---|
| Tile size | 36″ × 72″ — 18 sq ft per tile |
| List price | $46 per tile (about $2.56 / sq ft) |
| Weight | 11.5 lb per tile |
| Face | 100% recycled polyester, solution dyed |
| Face weight | 80.5 oz/yd² (±7%) |
| Fire rating | ASTM E648-10 Class 1 |
| Seam tape | None required |
| Warranty | 7-year limited |
| Lead time | 20 business days from PO and sample approval |
| Storage | Platform cart, 150 tiles (2,700 sq ft) per cart |
For a 10,000 sq ft gym, that works out to 556 tiles, four carts, and about 6,400 lb of tile — roughly 1,725 lb per loaded cart. Worth knowing before you plan the route from the storage room to the court.
When tiles beat rolls
Partial coverage. This is the big one. If you only need to protect the bench areas, the scorer’s table run, an equipment pathway, or the aisles for a testing setup, tiles are the only system that does it cleanly. You lay 40 tiles and you’re done. A roll system doesn’t cut in half.
Frequent conversion. Every vinyl install needs new seam tape. Court Armor’s hook tape is reusable 50+ times, which is generous but finite. Tiles need nothing. If you’re converting the gym weekly, the tape you never buy and the tape line you never square up is real money and real staff time.
Tight storage and access. A 10-roll rack is 120″ long and 70″ tall and needs a 34″ door and a turning radius. If your storage room is down a hallway with a corner in it, carts of flat tiles may be the only thing that physically gets there.
Damage isolation. When someone drops a chafing dish, you replace one $46 tile. On a roll system, you’re looking at a section.
Color. Tiles are the product that comes in your school’s colors — see Custom Color Heavy-Duty Modular Gym Floor Tiles. Rolls come in charcoal.
When rolls beat tiles, and we’d rather tell you now
Full-court events. Two people can deploy 10,000 sq ft of Court Armor Max rolls in about an hour, straight off the rack. The same coverage in tiles is 556 individual placements at 11.5 lb each. If your gym’s job is graduation once a year and assemblies twice, tiles are the wrong tool and rolls are half the price.
Budget. $25,600 versus $11,800 on a 10,000 sq ft floor. Tiles are 2.2× the material cost. That premium buys modularity. If you don’t need modularity, you’re paying for a feature you won’t use.
Labor at scale. Tiles are lighter per unit and heavier per project. Four loaded carts is a different staffing conversation than two racks.
If you’re covering a full court a handful of times a year, buy rolls. Run the ten-year numbers in Gym Floor Covers Cost, Lifespan & ROI before you decide.
The Cost of Gym Floor Damage
Without proper gym floor protection, facilities risk costly damages that can result in expensive repairs or full replacements. Consider these key points:
- A single refinishing project for a wood gym floor can cost between $10,000 – $30,000.
- Full replacement of a gym floor can exceed $100,000.
- Damage from spills, foot traffic, and equipment can shorten the lifespan of your gym flooring.
Protecting your gym floor with the right solutions can prevent unnecessary expenses and downtime.
FAQ
What is gym floor tile protection?
Gym floor tile protection is a modular cover system of individual carpet-faced tiles laid over a hardwood or synthetic athletic floor during non-athletic events. Court Armor tiles measure 36″ × 72″ (18 sq ft), weigh 11.5 lb each, require no seam tape, and carry a 7-year limited warranty.
How many tiles do I need for a gym floor?
Divide your usable floor area by 18. A 10,000 sq ft gym takes about 556 tiles. Measure with the bleachers both open and stored, and identify any zones — bench areas, aisles, stages — where partial coverage would do the job for less.
Are gym floor tiles better than rolls?
For partial coverage, frequent conversion, tight storage access, and custom color — yes. For full-court coverage a few times a year — no. Rolls cost about half as much per square foot and two people can deploy 10,000 sq ft in roughly an hour, where the same area in tiles is 556 individual placements.
Do gym floor tiles need seam tape?
No. Court Armor tiles butt against one another and require no tape or adhesive. That’s the main operational advantage over both roll systems and vinyl tarps, which need new tape at every install.
How much does gym floor tile protection cost?
$46 per 18 sq ft tile, or about $2.56 per square foot — roughly $25,600 for a 10,000 sq ft gym. Storage carts, freight, and custom color are quoted separately. Compare that to $40,000–$70,000 (2026) to sand and refinish the same floor.

Maintenance and storage
- Vacuum and extract. Solution-dyed fiber holds color through repeated extraction, which is why tiles still look right in year six. Follow the maintenance protocol for the full method.
- Dry before storing. Every time. A damp tile stacked in a cart is how a cover develops a problem it can’t recover from.
- Store flat on the cart. Not stacked on the floor, not leaned against a wall.
- Inspect on take-up, not on deployment. Finding a damaged tile the morning of graduation is the wrong time to find it. You can replace one.
