How to Measure for a Gym Floor Cover

How do you measure for a gym floor cover?

Measure the full length and width of the floor area you want to protect—not just the painted basketball court. Record permanent obstacles, bleachers, doorways, alcoves, and any areas that will remain uncovered. Then send the measurements with a simple floor sketch to your gym floor-cover supplier.

Accurate measurements help determine the amount of material needed, the best roll or tile layout, storage requirements, and the total system cost.

What You Need

Before measuring, gather:

  • A laser measuring device or long tape measure
  • A second person to verify measurements
  • Paper or a printed floor plan
  • A pencil
  • A camera or phone for reference photographs

A laser measure is usually the fastest option for a large gym. Take every important measurement twice before recording it.

Step 1: Decide What Area Needs Protection

First determine whether you need to cover:

  • The entire hardwood gym floor
  • Only the main event area
  • The basketball court plus surrounding traffic areas
  • Specific sections used for seating, tables, staging, or equipment
  • Alcoves or recessed areas outside the main rectangle

Do not assume the painted basketball court dimensions equal the floor area that needs protection. Hardwood flooring often extends beyond the court lines and may continue beneath retractable bleachers.

The objective is to measure the actual floor surface exposed during events.

Step 2: Measure the Main Floor Area

Measure the longest uninterrupted dimensions of the area:

  1. Measure the floor from end to end.
  2. Measure from side to side.
  3. Record both measurements in feet and inches.
  4. Repeat the measurements to verify them.

For a rectangular area, calculate the basic square footage:

Length × Width = Square Feet

For example:

100 feet × 60 feet = 6,000 square feet

This calculation gives you a preliminary floor area. It does not automatically determine the final amount of covering required because roll widths, tile dimensions, seams, layout, and product specifications must also be considered.

Step 3: Record Bleachers and Permanent Obstacles

Identify anything that changes the shape of the area being covered, including:

  • Retractable or permanent bleachers
  • Columns
  • Basketball goal supports
  • Wall padding
  • Equipment storage areas
  • Permanent stages
  • Floor-mounted fixtures
  • Railings
  • Built-in seating

Measure the distance from each obstacle to the nearest wall or floor edge.

For retractable bleachers, record whether the gym floor cover will be installed with the bleachers:

  • Fully open
  • Fully closed
  • Partially extended

This distinction can substantially change the required coverage area.

Do not subtract obstacles from the total square footage without discussing the layout with your supplier. In some installations, the safest and most efficient layout may be to cover around an obstacle rather than cutting the material precisely to its shape.

Step 4: Measure Alcoves and Irregular Areas Separately

If the gym is not a perfect rectangle, divide it into simple sections.

Measure the main rectangular floor first. Then measure each additional:

  • Alcove
  • Recess
  • Entry area
  • Side section
  • Hallway connection
  • Stage-front area

Record the length and width of each section separately.

For an L-shaped floor, calculate two rectangles rather than trying to estimate the entire shape at once.

Section A: Length × Width
Section B: Length × Width
Total: Section A + Section B

Some narrow recesses may be better protected with separate runners instead of extending the full floor-cover system into every corner. Your supplier can recommend the most efficient configuration after reviewing your sketch.

Step 5: Mark Doorways and Traffic Routes

Show all gym entrances, emergency exits, loading doors, and major walking routes on the floor sketch.

This helps determine:

  • The direction in which rolls or tiles should be installed
  • Where seams may fall
  • How materials will be moved into the gym
  • Whether additional entrance or transition protection is needed
  • How emergency exits will remain accessible

The final layout should support efficient deployment without obstructing required exits or creating avoidable transitions in major traffic areas.

Step 6: Create a Simple Floor Sketch

Your drawing does not need to be professionally drafted.

Include:

  • Overall length and width
  • Bleacher locations
  • Columns and fixed obstacles
  • Alcoves and recesses
  • Doorways and exits
  • Areas that will not be covered
  • Stage or seating locations, when known
  • The anticipated direction of event traffic

Label every measurement clearly.

Photographs are also helpful, particularly when the gym has irregular walls, bleachers, permanent equipment, or unusual transitions.

Do Not Add Material for Seams on Your Own

Roll widths, tile dimensions, seam connections, and installation layouts differ by product.

Some vinyl systems require overlapping or taped seams, while carpet rolls and modular tiles may use different connection methods. Therefore, do not add an arbitrary percentage for seams, overlap, or waste unless your supplier directs you to do so.

Provide the exact floor dimensions first. Enhance Mats can then determine the proper quantity based on the specific gym floor-cover system being considered.

Gym Floor Measurement Checklist

Before requesting a quote, confirm that you have recorded:

  • Overall floor length
  • Overall floor width
  • Total preliminary square footage
  • Bleacher position during events
  • Permanent obstacles
  • Alcoves and irregular sections
  • Doorways and emergency exits
  • Areas that do not require coverage
  • Intended event uses
  • Photographs or a simple floor sketch
  • Delivery and storage access

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I measure the basketball court lines or the entire gym floor?

Measure the entire floor area that will be exposed to event traffic, furniture, staging, or equipment. Painted court lines do not normally represent the complete area that requires protection.

Do I include the floor underneath retractable bleachers?

Include it when the bleachers will be closed during events and that portion of the floor will be exposed. Record the bleacher position you expect to use during installation.

Should I subtract columns and permanent obstacles?

Record the dimensions and locations of all obstacles, but do not automatically subtract them from the order quantity. The final layout may require covering around them.

How do I measure an irregularly shaped gym?

Divide the floor into rectangles. Measure and calculate each section separately, then provide a labeled sketch showing how the sections connect.

Should I order extra gym floor-cover material?

Do not add an arbitrary amount. The necessary allowance depends on the selected product, roll width, tile size, seam method, installation direction, and floor layout.
